At Innocent Bystander we see wine as a facilitator of good times, rather than the centre of attention. A seriously good drop has the power to enhance an experience – from the food to the flow of the conversation.

Which is why although we pray to the grape gods, we don’t preach superiority or show off our smarts. Because when it comes to wine chat, we’re as chill as Prosecco on ice.

    Ever the savvy character, our cultured pinot gris drinker knows exactly who they are and their place in the world. You’ll find them glued to the latest netflix doco or deep in a prize-winning novel – which they’ll later unpack in detail over a bottle of white and a well paired meal (grilled snapper with pineapple salsa is a favourite). Indeed, they’re all about expanding their repertoire. Whether it’s from sauvignon blanc to pinot gris, or leisurely breakfasts to yoga (...Which they really should’ve gone to this morning). Safe to say, they always have an opinion at book club.

    Declaring their favourite tipple, ‘so old school, it’s new school’ – our discerning chardonnay drinker knows a good sip. Regardless of what’s on trend. Likewise, when it comes to reading and watching material, they devour all things charming and thought provoking (like wes anderson’s latest). Armed with more knowledge than our pinot gris drinker, for them, wine is the perfect companion for an afternoon in the country or dining out somewhere nice – and they know exactly which meal to pair it with. After all, this isn’t the kind of chardonnay their mum used to drink.

    A self-avowed culture buff, our pinot noir drinker touts the pedigree of their chosen beverage just as they would the perfect pair of aged rm williams. (in all things, they love to go local.) from long form journalism to long lunches rich in meaty goodness, they delight in reading and drinking material that are as full of history as they are of flavour. Basically, they to know their stuff. And know how to appreciate a sense of place. A story teller through and through, when they get going, best settle in for the long haul.

    Cultivating a stronger male presence than our pinot noir, our syrah drinker is as smooth and sophisticated as his glass of carefully considered red. Not one to follow trends (so much so, he doesn’t even know they’re happening), he’s more interested in the markers of his own taste. In his eyes, food and wine are experiences to be savoured; best paired with a roaring fire, classic novel and a charming regional getaway. As a deep thinker, he’s known to wax lyrical on everything from wine regions to climate change. And trust us, whatever he’s whipped up in the slow cooker – you want a taste.

    An explorer at heart who’s driven by a real zest for life, our tempranillo drinker is a character (to say the least). He’ll regale the entire table with tales of the time he knocked back pisco sours in the depths of peru, all the while quoting garcia marquez for good measure (luckily, he never takes himself too seriously). And he likes nothing more than devouring an exotic meal paired with a spicy bottle of red – always best shared with friends. A vibrant soul with a taste for all things global; he’s the ultimate travel buddy.

Devil’s Corner

When you’re ready to reflect on the day, Devil’s Corner is the wine buddy you’re looking for. After a day of downhill skiing (never hele-skiing), you’ll split a bottle of cool-climate Pinot Noir, a liquid borne of the beautiful struggle between Devil’s Corner and the deep blue sea. Bold. Brave. Wild and adventurous, Devil’s Corner will push you a little by asking ‘why?’, but never out of a plane. You’ll hear about a wine obsession but from the narrative of the grape. Layman’s terms over confusing lingo, Devil’s Corner will happily push technical chats aside in honour of more grounded questions like ‘how’s the serenity, mate? That wind, she’ll blow, won’t she?’ Devil’s Corner is an actual place – a treacherous bend in the Tamar River. And while it’s definitely as hectic as it sounds, this wild spot is deeply special. Because it makes us who we are.

It makes us hardy, resourceful, calm (in a storm). No matter how busy we get, we never let it overwhelm us. Our daily surf helps keep us grounded. Our morning coffee and weather check on the deck reminds us of the joy we find in simple things. We celebrate the adventurous spirit of our surroundings, but keep our home life easy. Country-pub-level relaxed. While some days are harder than others – at the mercy of Mother Nature like we are – we roll with it. Take it on the chin, as they say. We lace up our boots, shoot a quick g’day to the neighbours, and suck in some cool Tassie air. Then we get on with doing what we do best: making consistently great wine in one of the most unpredictable spots on Earth. Because our place is a casual, comfortable place to be. Even though the landscape around us is anything but.

    You can taste the wind in your cheeks. It’s pretty wild out here. But we never let a swirling wind or clapping ocean slow us down. We harness the strong winds, ocean swells, even the drought, to make some of Australia’s most popular cool-climate wines. In every Devil’s Corner wine, you can taste the cold air’s acidity in your cheeks, the ripe fruit from the shoreline in your throat. And you can feel the adventurous spirit in your bones.

    Devil’s Corner wines hold the crisp acidity of the Apple Isle’s cold climate. Our brand takes its name (and adventurous spirit) from the treacherous bend in the Tamar River nearby. And we’ve been using the wilds of Mother Nature to our advantage since we planted our first vines in 1985. From our full-bodied cool-climate Pinot Noir, to our bright, acid-fresh Pinot Grigio, it’s only natural we’d be Tassie’s favourite.

  • Brown Brothers

    Genuine. Open. Casual, but never improper, Brown Brothers will get social at dusk and be in bed before midnight. They will always pronounce their syllables and stick to a solid rating of PG. With 127 years of knowledge filtered through every glass, Brown Brothers are knowledgable but never know-it-alls. To them, education is about experience. And conversations should always be driven by adventures in wine, not their egos. With Brown Brothers, warmth is as free-flowing as a bold Shiraz, and that’s just the way Ross likes it. “Brown Brothers is a wine brand with tradition, not a traditional wine brand”.

  • We respect Great John enough to break all of his rules.

    Brown Brothers has been home to some of Australia’s favourite wines for over 130 years. And since our Great Grandfather, John Frances Brown, crushed his first grape in 1889, we have honoured the traditions, but never let them tell us what to do. While we still enjoy our Prosecco paired with oysters at Christmas, and the 1980 Malbec that comes out of the cellar on special occasions, we taste every wine as if for the first time. And we make wine a little like that, too. For tomorrow’s tastebuds. John wouldn’t have had it any other way.

    At Brown Brothers, we like to push the boundaries of what traditional winemaking can be. Like working with the CSIRO to develop a new varietal with a lovely name and even lovelier palate (hello, Cienna); or drawing complex flavours from techniques with even more complex names (from carbonic maceration to wild ferments). In the micro-winery we call our ‘kindergarten’, there are no boundaries. The only rule? To fail an experiment at least once every year.
